چکیده

Plane strain transient finite thermomechanical deformations of heat-conducting functionally gradient materials comprised of tungsten and nickel–iron matrix are analyzed to delineate brittle/ductile failures by the nodal release technique. Each material is modeled as strain-hardening, strain-rate-hardening and thermally-softening. Effective properties are derived by the rule of mixtures. At nominal strain-rate of 2000 s 1 brittle crack speed approaches Rayleigh s wave speed in the tungsten-plate, the nickel–iron-plate shatters at strain-rates above 1130 s , and the composite plate does not shatter. The maximum speed of a ductile crack in tungsten and nickel–iron is about 1.5 km/s, and that in the composite is about 0.14 km/s. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mixed Mode Crack Propagation of Zirconia/Nickel Functionally Graded Materials

Zirconia-nickel functionally graded materials were obtained by powder metallurgy technique. The microstructure, residual stress, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were investigated. Mixed-mode fracture response of YSZ /Ni functionally graded materials was examined utilizing the three point bending test and finite element method (Cosmos/M 2.7). The results show that the stress intensity fac...

Mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in ductile and brittle solids

The mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation are examined with particular emphasis on the similarities and differences between cyclic crack growth in ductile materials, such as metals, and corresponding behavior in brittle materials, such as intermetallics and ceramics. This is achieved by considering the process of fatiguecrack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crac...

Failure-mode Transition Speed in Three- Dimensional Transient Deformations of a Microporous Heat-conducting Thermoelastoviscoplastic Prenotched Plate

We analyze three-dimensional finite coupled thermomechanical deformations of a rectangular plate with two parallel notches placed symmetrically about the horizontal centroidal plane of the plate. The edge surface of the plate between the two notches is struck by a cylindrical projectile of diameter equal to the distance between the notches and made of the same material as the plate. The plate m...

Stress Intensity Factor Determination in Functionally Graded Materials, Considering Continuously Varying of Material Properties

In this paper, the plates made of functionally graded material (FGM) with and without a crack are numerically simulated, employing the finite element method (FEM). The material property variations are defined to be fully continuous; therefore, the elements can be as small as required. For this purpose, variations of the material properties are applied in both the integration points and in the n...
